An Ode to a High Trust Society: Ljubljana, Slovenia at Christmas
I arrived in Ljubljana by train on a Monday night in December, coming from Zurich via Villach, a small Austrian border town where you switch to a local Slovene commuter train for the final stretch.
That last leg is one of the most peaceful experiences I can remember. Alone in a near empty carriage, darkness outside, stopping in towns like Jesenice and Kranj that nobody writes travel guides about. The cleanliness of the train, the quiet, the awareness that you could go 4,000 miles in any direction before finding someone who knew you. A nighttime train through small town Slovenia gave me an overwhelming sense of freedom that is genuinely hard to describe. It just did.
I dropped my bag at the apartment and went straight to the Christmas markets. Ljubljana’s are underrated by European standards. Small wooden huts line the Ljubljanica river, mulled wine, fairy lights, the whole thing done without the crowds or the commercialization you get in Prague or Vienna.
I stopped at one of the huts and ordered a hot wine. When I went to pay I realized I had completely forgotten I had been spending Swiss francs for the past week and had no euros and no cash at all. My stomach sank. That moment of realization you get when you know you are about to have a problem.
Except it was not a problem. Not here.
The man behind the counter, in impressive English, told me to take the wine, enjoy the markets, come back whenever I passed an ATM, and that there was absolutely no rush. He even pointed out a couple of machines I might walk past on my way around.
I found the nearest ATM and came back within ten minutes just to get it off my mind. But the gesture had already done something. The level of trust that man extended to a complete stranger, a foreigner he had never seen before and would likely never see again, is the kind of trust I associate with close friends back home. Not strangers in city centers.
I have thought about that interaction a lot since. There is something about a high trust society that you cannot fully appreciate until you are standing inside one. Ljubljana has built something genuinely rare and most people have never heard of the place.
It should be higher on every list.
